If you’re talking to an authority figure or you want to show respect to an elder, be sure to use the formal title when addressing him or her in Portuguese:

  • o senhor (ooh seen-yoh) (Sir; literally, the gentleman)

  • a senhora (ah-seen-yoh-rah) (Ma’am; literally, the lady)
