Include more greens in your green smoothie if it tastes too sweet. The bitter taste of green leafy veggies helps balance the sweet flavor of the fruits. A smoothie can be sweet from using naturally sweet fruits such as pineapple, mango, guava, passion fruit, or melon. Fruit that is really ripe or overripe can also make a smoothie taste sweet.

Of course, a sweet-tasting green smoothie is okay, but if it tastes too sweet and you don’t enjoy the sweetness, then add more greens.

Large leafy greens such as kale, Swiss chard, collard greens, bok choy, beet greens, and romaine lettuce tend to be the most bitter. Smaller leaves such as watercress, baby spinach, parsley, and cilantro have a milder taste. Celery leaves have their own unique flavor that some people really don’t like. Keep that in mind when adding more greens to your smoothie.

If your smoothie tastes too sweet, add more fresh leafy greens or more fresh lemon or lime juice. To adjust the flavor, add a small amount of greens, blend, and taste. If it’s still too sweet, add more greens, but again in small amounts. Add no more than 1/2 cup of additional greens at a time.

For fresh lemon or lime, add 1/4 of a fresh lemon or lime squeezed at a time. You can always add more, but you can’t take the extra out if you add too much.

Add more greens to your smoothie if you

  • Enjoy bitter flavor more than sweet

  • Are sensitive or intolerant to fruit sugars

  • Don’t eat greens in your normal daily diet

  • Crave the taste of greens

  • Are healing from injury or illness and want more chlorophyll and nutrients for faster recovery
