Good oral care is a top priority for people with diabetes because they may be more susceptible to mouth and gum infections. Elevated blood glucose can encourage infections and can hamper the healing process. The best way to prevent these infections is to brush twice a day and floss. It’s good for your mouth — and your breath will thank you, too.

The other way to take care of your teeth, mouth, and gums is to visit a dentist every 6 months for a cleaning. Tell your dentist that you have diabetes and write it down on the paperwork when you check in for your appointment. Make sure to tell your dentist or hygienist about any problems you’re experiencing such as dry mouth, bleeding or sensitive gums, or persistent bad breath or bad taste in your mouth.
