Your first hands-on step with data is getting it from wherever it is to the place where you need it to be. Text formats are common, and you’re likely to encounter them often. One of the most common is comma-separated value (.csv) text.
KNIME.com AG is a small software and services firm focused on data mining. It offers a data-mining product with a visual programming interface. To open the sample data in KNIME:
Start KNIME.
A version of KNIME is available free of charge, and the company provides additional features, a server version, technical support, and related services on a paid basis.
Find the CSV Reader in the Node Repository (a menu).
It’s grouped with other tools for importing data.
Drag the CSV Reader to the work area.
CSV Reader is now in the KNIME work area.
Right-click and select Configure.
Browse to find the cigarette data.
Adjust settings.
Make sure to select the proper delimiters (commas) and indicate that column headers (variable names) are in the first line of data.
Click the Execute button to import the data.
The CSV Reader will show a green indicator (bottom right) when the data has been imported.
Find the Statistics node in the Node Repository.
Drag it to the work area.
Click the small arrow on the right side of the CSVReader.
Then click the arrow on the left side of the Statistics node.
Right-click the Statistics node.
Choose Execute and Open Views from the menu.
KNIME will display a summary report.
It provides key summary statistics for each continuous variable quickly and easily.
