Knitted brocade is characterized by an allover pattern of slightly raised stitches. This swatch of knitted diamond brocade is a good example of true brocade — as you can see with the raised diamond pattern.

Try your hand at knitting a sample of diamond brocade:

  1. Cast on a multiple of 8 sts, plus 1 st.

  2. Follow this stitch pattern:

    Row 1 (RS): K4, * p1, k7; rep from * to last 5 sts, p1, k4.

    Row 2: P3, * k1, p1, k1, p5; rep from * to last 6 sts, k1, p1, k1, p3.

    Row 3: K2, * p1, k3; rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, k2.

    Row 4: P1, * k1, p5, k1, p1; rep from * to end of row.

    Row 5: * P1, k7; rep from * to last st, p1.

    Row 6: Repeat Row 4.

    Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

    Row 8: Repeat Row 2.

  3. Repeat Rows 1–8 to create the pattern.
