To make a yarn over (abbreviated yo) that follows a purl stitch and precedes a knit stitch (which you’d encounter in a pattern as p1, yo, k1), follow these steps:

  1. Purl the first stitch and leave the yarn in the front of your work.

  2. Knit the next stitch.

    The yarn automatically crosses the RH needle when you knit this next stitch (see the following figure).
